“GRAZIA” presents a special Issue created by artificial intelligence designer and guest editor Tom Dixon
On the occasion of the city’s Salone del Mobile and Fuori Salone – also known simply as Design Week in Milan – Grazia, the magazine published by Reworld Media Group and directed by Silvia Grilli, is unveiling a special artificial intelligence issue. In his role as guest editor of the publication, renowned British designer Tom Dixon chose to examine the myriad applications of A.I.
Works created exclusively for Grazia by digital artist Hey Reilly combine collage techniques with generative A.I. aesthetics. His cover for the magazine pays tribute to two Italian icons: the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci and a vase by the designer Gaetano Pesce, who died early this month.
Dixon examines artificial intelligence by exploring its creative potential and relevance to science, the environment and music, while also acknowledging the risks and limitations of this disruptive technology.
“Tom’s curiosity and revolutionary aesthetics took us outside our comfort zone to discover new creative worlds, assess their potential and consider their risks. It was an exciting experience, for which I thank Dixon and his team,” said Grazia editor-in-chief Silvia Grilli.
“The invitation to edit this special issue of Grazia was an incredible opportunity to delve into the impossible and rapidly changing world of artificial intelligence,” said Dixon. “Playing with the traditional format of magazine pages and generating new, unexpected results was a learning experience. This was an illuminating journey and it was a privilege to bring new voices to the publication. Thanks to Silvia and the Grazia team for their patience, generosity and support in sharing their editorial space.”
In this visionary issue, readers will find a discussion of how modern architecture and design are changing through their increasing reliance on artificial intelligence. This advanced technology is revolutionizing the very ways in which architects, scientists and artists in general, conceive, create and complete their works.
Dixon’s graphic design team contributed to the issue’s visual development with high-impact, avant-garde imagery. Dixon personally engaged with leading figures such as James Kinross, surgeon at London’s Imperial College, founder and editorial director at Dazed Media Jefferson Hack, and digital creative Hey Reilly, who won over the fashion world with his collages and designed the issue’s cover. Dixon also contributed an original portfolio by presenting some of his best-known works using a new visual language.
American studio Maison Meta, which specializes in the use of artificial intelligence, developed a fashion spread for Grazia set in a future where cars and people live together.
In an exclusive interview, designer Norma Kamali discusses the most ambitious project of her career: teaching artificial intelligence to design dresses and accessories in her style, allowing her ideas to transcend time.
Food stylist and artist Francesca Sarti, in addition, devised a menu generated by artificial intelligence, featuring iridescent zabaione cocktails, glacial pizzas and moon bread.
The issue also includes other stories in which design and technology merge, in features with visual artist Philippe Pareno, photographer Maria Mavropoulou, art curators Alice Rawsthorn and Paola Antonelli, and artist Wolfe von Lenkiewicz.
